Diabetes Didn’t Stop Me from Getting to the Top of Half Dome

After my diabetes diagnosis in February 1990, I determined not to let diabetes keep me from getting the most out of life. I wouldn’t let it stop me from doing anything.

We had spent our honeymoon in Yosemite.

I loved wandering the valley and gazing up at the granite rising majestically all around me, especially Half Dome. My husband, Kevin, told me he had hiked to the top a few years earlier.

I decided I wanted to sit at the top of that rock too.

In June, we returned to Yosemite and acquired permits to hike the famous rock. I had no idea how difficult it would be. We hiked halfway up and camped in Little Yosemite Valley. From there I could see what looked like ants crawling up the side of the dome. It turns out they were people using cable guides and wooden planks to get up the rounded side of the famous rock.

I admit, it was scary ascending and my hands felt like they were glued to the cables, but we made it. It remains one of my fondest and most encouraging memories.

Diabetes will never be an excuse for me. This is one of two reasons I love Yosemite. The other reason I love Yosemite is that my husband introduced me – a girl from the plains of Minnesota – to the towering granite walls of Yosemite Valley, and it became my favorite place on earth.

What about you? What’s your favorite place? Please tell me about it in the comments!
